Pit Fire Workshop

Join Josh for a special class on pit firing, where open flames create unique ceramics with earthy tones and patterns. Learn how to make and fire pottery for this technique. The firing session will be held at Fiesta Island at dusk. Prerequisite: Intro to Hand-building, Intro to Throwing, or pre-approved equivalent experience.

Workshop Schedule

Saturday & Sunday, August 24th & 25th

  • Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM (Morning Session), 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM (Afternoon Session)

  • Location: Tao of Clay, 2295 National Ave, San Diego, CA

Saturday: Crafting Your Forms

  • Learn the fundamentals of pit firing preparation.

  • Josh will demonstrate the "upside down pots" throwing technique, which is particularly suited for pit firing.

Sunday: Terra Sigillata Application

  • Discover how to create and apply terra sigillata, a fine slip that enhances the finish of your pottery.

Thursday, August 29th

  • Time: 6:30 PM - Approximately 10:30 PM

  • Location: Fiesta Island

Firing at Fiesta Island

  • Join us at dusk for the firing session.

  • Your bisqued pieces will be ready for you to complete the pit firing process.

  • Josh will lead the fire building, with hands-on assistance from all students.

Additional Information:

  • Please bring your own lunch for the break on Saturday and Sunday. Alternatively there are a few local spots nearby where you can get lunch quickly.

  • Dress appropriately for outdoor activities on Thursday night.
