Join us for a special edition of the Kurinuki Workshop with ceramic artist Josh Herman hosted at the Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum in Balboa Park. All tickets include entry to the garden.
Join Josh in exploring Kurinuki, the Japanese technique of carving clay. This workshop invites you to approach clay differently by starting with a single block and hollowing it out, creating a unique carved cup that reflects the natural qualities of the clay and your own hand movements. It’s a process that requires patience, observation, and trust in your tactile instincts.
Students will be guided through each step of the carving process, including roughing out a form, refining the shape with tools and pressure, and adding texture or surface details. This workshop is as much about process as it is about product. with Josh's expert guidance, students are encouraged to explore the meditative, intuitive aspects of working slowly and attentively.
This workshop reflects the ethos that Tao of Clay founder Josh Herman brings to both his studio and his practice where the clay leads and the maker follows. It’s an invitation to slow down, tune in, and create something deeply personal.
Tao of Clay has created custom glazes for this workshop, inspired by the colors and natural beauty of the Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum. Participants will have the opportunity to select from these exclusive glazes to finish their cup.
