At Tao of Clay we integrate the artistry of clay with the principles of mindfulness and organicity. It's a place where making art isn't just about what you create, but also about discovering yourself along the way.

A Letter from our Founder

The creative process is a dynamic moment-to-moment unfolding, regardless of the form in which it is expressed; Clay is a medium that brings the artist into the process quite physically, working its wet surface as it spins on the wheel, its shape changing under the hands of the artist with every turn. The artist is invited to participate mindfully in that sensual flow, embracing the organicity inherent in both the material and the process.

One thing that makes what we’re doing here unique among ceramic arts programs is what’s represented in our name. We chose Tao of Clay because the principles I infuse into my teaching are rooted in the philosophy of Flow, a core principle of Taoism. There are ways we interrupt the flow of our creativity or argue with it or impose obstacles onto its natural unfolding. I teach how to trust and work with your creativity in a collaborative way that is nurturing to the process, to the product, and to yourself. I see art as not only a means of self expression but of self discovery.

A bit of backstory… after I went to grad school for ceramics I studied psychotherapy. I was trained in Hakomi, an approach to working clinically with clients that is more experiential than the conversational nature of most psychotherapies. What attracted me to Hakomi was the fact that its techniques and methods of deep personal discovery and development are rooted in and expressive of Taoist principles, which I resonate strongly with. Just as with Taoism, the underlying principles of Hakomi offer a grounding in how to live one’s life with more presence, connection, meaning, success, and fulfillment. When I shifted back to being a full-time ceramic artist, I put those principles to work as a teacher and in my own creative process as a sculptor.

My intention is to provide education as a path of growth in the creative process. It is our hope that the principles of this education lend themselves to growth outside of the creative practice, in relationships, in connection to experience and in awareness of self. In each class we’ll be incorporating overviews and exercises that ground you in the principles the school and my work embodies. Yes, the focus is on working with clay and learning technique in breadth and depth, but I trust you’ll see great value in what we’re adding to that.
