Spirals in Motion: A Reflection on Sara Federici’s Workshop at Tao of Clay
Sara Federici is a Florence-based ceramic artist and the creative force behind SFceramica, where she crafts handmade tableware, lighting, and sculptural vases that balance form, texture, and atmosphere. Born and raised in Florence, Sara’s artistic journey began with studies in Chinese calligraphy, drawing, and figurative sculpture before she turned her full creative focus to working with clay. Entirely self-taught, she has developed a distinct visual language in both stoneware and porcelain, experimenting with unique engobe and glaze palettes while integrating hand building, wheel throwing in her practice. Sara’s work reflects a deep curiosity about how ceramics interact with spaces and everyday life, creating objects that are at once functional and expressive.
A Hands On Exploration of Gesture and Form
At Tao of Clay, we believe that clay isn’t just a material, it’s a way of connecting to ourselves, responding, and discovering what wants to emerge from within us. Tao of Clay came alive with shape, gesture, and creative exchange during Sara Federici’s Spiral Vase Workshop. Sara’s workshop embodied this present focused spirit, inviting artists to explore the flow of form and to work with clay in a way that is both intuitive and expressive.

Over two days, Sara guided participants through her approach to hand-building spiral vases, a technique rooted in coiling and pinching. This method emphasizes rhythm, balance, and movement, encouraging makers to let go of rigid plans and to respond to the clay’s evolving shape. A methodology that lends itself to movement and flow in the final form.
Rather than imposing uniformity, Sara invites exploration. Participants learn how to build up walls using coils, allowing each piece to grow organically. Students use tools to push and pull texture and surface, bringing expressive depth to the work. Our students experimented with rhythm and asymmetry, discovering that the spiral isn’t just a shape; it’s a gesture in space.
As the workshop unfolded, it became clear that technique served as a starting point, but what is truly amazing in these classes is how each individual artist's style and intuition became clear over time, making this technique a creative tool that encourages individual style to shine through.

What made this workshop especially memorable was watching each artist interpret the process and make it their own. Some spirals pushed upward, tall and deliberate. Others curved and looped with softer energy. Some embraced texture boldly, while others favored quiet simplicity.
Sara’s techniques served as a shared foundation, but the work that emerged was deeply personal, a reflection of each person's instincts and artistic perspective. This is why taking guest artist workshops is so important: exploring other styles and techniques not only expands our skill set but also helps us discover our own unique voice in clay.

The Value of Visiting Artists
Bringing global voices like Sara’s into our San Diego studio helps broaden our community’s understanding of what’s possible with clay. These workshops aren’t just about acquiring new tools and techniques, they’re about expanding how we see, feel, and interact with the medium.
Sara’s practice, shaped by her experience in Italy and her unique blend of intuitive and technical approaches, offered fresh ways to think about form and movement. And in turn, our community responded with openness and playfulness, resulting in beautiful vases that each student took home.
