Level: Beginner-Advanced

Prerequisite: Prior experience is not necessary. Open to all skill levels.

Discover the elegance and expressive possibilities of cobalt underglaze painting in this hands-on Blue & White porcelain workshop with Yunting Li. Guided by Yunting’s expertise, participants will explore historic techniques rooted in the Ming Dynasty and refined in Japan’s Arita porcelain, bridging centuries of artistry while remaining fresh and inspiring today. Suitable for all levels, the workshop covers traditional brushwork, compositional planning, and pigment control, building both skill and confidence on porcelain surfaces.


Workshop Schedule

9:30 AM – 12:30 PM

  • Historical context and design inspiration
  • Demonstration of materials and techniques
  • Guided brushwork practice
  • Design planning and transferring to bisqueware
  • Painting on bisqueware

Please note: a materials list can be found below that details what is required for each participant to bring.


What to Know Before Class

  • Tools: Please see the Materials List below for a complete list of the tools participants are required to bring. Tao of Clay will not provide the required tools and participants are expected to bring their own. All other necessary glazes and tools not listed in the Materials List will be provided by Tao of Clay.
  • Dress Comfortably: Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy.
  • Firing: Firing is $3.00/lb and can be paid for at the end of the workshop.
  • Studio Access: This workshop does not include studio access outside of workshop hours.

Materials List

Bring Your Own Bisqueware

Each participant should bring 2-3 cone 5/6 Porcelain Bisqueware Pieces.

Laguna WC-437 Frost is recommended for its bright white tone and translucency.

For those who do not have bisqueware ready, Yunting will provide cups, vases, and plates available for purchase at the start of the workshop. 

Required Tools

Participants should bring the following tools to the workshop:

  • A few different-sized brushes (Yunting will bring her preferred brushes to be available for purchase during the workshop)
  • One 6B pencil (for clear transfer lines)
  • One red pen and one blue pen
  • One eraser
  • One pair of sharp scissors (capable of cutting rice paper)
  • One utility knife

The tools listed above are required for the workshop and will not be provided by Tao of Clay. All other necessary glazes and tools will be provided by Tao of Clay.


About Yunting

Yunting Li is a ceramic artist, educator, and glaze designer at Laguna Clay and Glaze Company, where she develops and refines glazes trusted by artists worldwide. She holds a BFA in Ceramics from Jingdezhen Ceramic University—the world’s porcelain capital—and an MFA in Ceramics from Saga University in Japan.

With more than a decade of experience, Yunting has taught extensively across the U.S. and internationally, leading workshops on Glaze Decoration & Chemistry, Underglaze Painting, and Wheel-Throwing Techniques. She also teaches at the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA), where her classes are known for combining technical expertise with an approachable, inspiring style of instruction.

Fluent in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Japanese, Yunting brings a rare cross-cultural perspective to her teaching. Her workshops are celebrated for being hands-on, engaging, and insightful—demystifying glaze science while sparking creativity for artists at every level.


Cancellation Policy:

  • Cancellations made more than 30 days in advance: 50% refund.
  • Cancellations within 30 days of the workshop start date: non-refundable.

Missed Class Policy:

We do not offer refunds, prorated refunds, or make-up sessions for missed workshop days or time.
