Developing Glazes Through Testing is designed for ceramicists who are ready to move beyond using studio glazes and begin exploring how glazes are made, modified, and refined. Through a hands-on, methodical approach, this course will introduce the key principles of glaze testing—including how to use line blends, triaxial blends, and substitution testing to evaluate and understand glaze ingredients.

Rather than focusing on glaze chemistry, this class emphasizes the process of experimentation. Students will work primarily on small test tiles and will complete dozens of tests throughout the course, documenting and analyzing results along the way. You’ll learn to mix small batches of glaze, calculate recipes using a simple formula, and systematically adjust variables like colorants and fluxes.

We’ll discuss both the chemistry and the aesthetics of glaze: how materials interact in the kiln, how firing atmosphere and temperature affect the outcome, and how to observe and troubleshoot unexpected results. You’ll also have the opportunity to begin refining your own glaze palette, whether you’re seeking to develop soft satin finishes, bright colors, earth tones, or subtle texture variations.

By the end of the course, you’ll leave with a working knowledge of basic glaze testing methodology, a growing library of your own test results, and a sense of direction in your glaze development practice. This is a great starting point for anyone looking to take creative control of their surfaces and understand how glaze can enhance and transform your work.
