Slab Bowls Workshop with Theo Hirschfield

In this Slab Bowls Workshop, ceramic artist Theo Hirschfield will guide students through creating refined, repeatable slab-built bowls using pre-made bisque molds.

Theo will begin with a demonstration of how to create clay molds from found forms, giving students a clear understanding of the mold-making process and how it can be incorporated into their own practice. While students will not be making molds in this workshop, they will gain the knowledge needed to explore the process independently.

Students will then work with pre-made bisque molds to create their own slab-built bowls. The class will cover how to roll and compress slabs, form clean and consistent shapes within molds, control thickness, and safely remove work. We will also explore techniques for refining edges and adding simple surface treatments such as smoothing and texturing.

By the end of the workshop, students will leave with completed slab-built bowls ready for drying and firing, along with a strong foundation in both mold-making concepts and mold-based construction.

Prerequisite: No prior experience is necessary. Open to all skill levels.

Firing: The course fee includes the cost of firing one bowl with glaze of choice

Studio Access: This is a one-time workshop with no studio access outside of the scheduled class.
