Throwing 3: Further Studies is for experienced students who are ready to push the boundaries of their throwing practice and explore more advanced forms and processes. In this course, we’ll dive into the intricacies of building functional forms such as teapots and lidded jars.
You’ll be introduced to throwing off the hump—a technique used to produce multiple small pieces from a single large ball of clay—and explore altering thrown forms through cutting, reshaping, and assembling. We’ll also begin integrating decorative techniques such as mark-making and surface design, offering new ways to express your voice through clay.
As in earlier levels, this course continues to emphasize the Tao of Clay’s mindful approach to throwing. You’ll receive hands-on support and thoughtful feedback as you explore new techniques and expand your skills.
By the end of the course, students will have gained the confidence and versatility to take on more ambitious work, with a solid understanding of both functional design and creative expression.
Level: Intermediate
Prerequisite Note: This course is intended for intermediate students who have completed prior wheel throwing courses. Participants should be comfortable centering at least 4 lbs of clay and throwing a 10” tall cylinder.
