From Feeling to Form

At Tao of Clay we harmonize the artistry of clay with the therapeutic principles of Mindfulness and Organicity. It's a place where making art isn't just about what you create, but also about discovering yourself along the way. We promote immersing ourselves in the creative process, prioritizing our present experiences, and shaping not only objects but also individual growth. By nurturing both the artist and the art, we're fostering a passion for ceramics and helping people tap into their inner creativity in a welcoming communal space.

We encourage engagement through memberships, classes, workshops with guest artists, and browsing our retail shop. Classes are open to people of all skill levels. We offer a diverse curriculum which encompasses throwing, hand-building, and glaze development. Membership is available to individuals who possess the ability to work independently and express an interest in becoming part of our community. Members enjoy discounts on classes, workshops, and in our retail space.

The foundational principle of Tao of Clay is the incorporation of Mindfulness, Organicity, Non-violence, and Mind-Body Holism into the ceramic process. We see the experiential nature of clay as an opportunity to engage in self-exploration and self-awareness. By engaging with this ideology we grow not only as artists but also as individuals.

  • This course was the perfect way to get into ceramics. It was special because I got to know the other learners in a small class setting and we built a sense of community and support in that short time. The instructor was very positive but his calm, peaceful demeanor and incorporation of Hakomi principals in the course made it relaxing and therapeutic. He took a lot of care and pride in our individual and collective progress in the course, and it showed in the pieces we created.

  • Absolutely loved this course! This was my first introduction to ceramics and it was such a fun and positive experience. Josh is a great instructor, very hands on and passionate about the success of each of his students. The studio is very welcoming and the staff is so approachable and helpful! Ava is on top of everything and keeps the studio running like a well oiled machine. This is a great space to create, learn and become part of a very talented community.

  • Josh and his staff have created an exceptional environment for anyone that walks through the door. This is a place to create, gain inspiration and make lasting friendships.

  • We would begin each class with a meditation, or mindfulness exercise. It was a great way to get present and just focus on class for the next three hours.

  • The intro to throwing course was slow enough to be able to absorb all the instruction but fast enough to still be challenging. The team at Tao of Clay was very encouraging and all the supplies were provided, so it did not feel intimidating to jump in. Each week there was a new technique taught and between the class and practice hours there was plenty of time to practice.

  • The biggest takeaway was all the technical aspects of throwing I learned like arm placement, applying pressure evenly to the clay, finger placement when pulling. At the same time though it was learning the relationship I had with clay and understanding that you can't really force it, you have to work with it in a very respectful way that is equally important.
